You like what you hear? You want a greater diversity of opinion? Community radio is important to you? Then support Freies Radio Innsbruck financially through your membership fee or a donation. What’s in it for you? What does it support? And how do we, as a society, profit from it?

Why become a member of FREIRAD?

• Your financial contribution secures and stabilizes the work of Freies Radio Innsbruck (FREIRAD) alongside existing grants. Funding from grant providers alone is not enough; co-financing from our own resources is always required.
• Our work gives many people access to the medium radio. This makes your radio program more diverse and colorful—free from commercial clutter and advertising. Your financial contribution also safeguards our independence as a radio station and ensures diversity within the Tyrolean media landscape.
• Members—whether they are radio broadcasters or not—can use our infrastructure, such as the studio or recording equipment. They also have access to facilities like the seminar room and the „FREIRAD Leihrad“ (an e-cargo bike), as well as various event equipment (tents, speakers, microphones, etc.).
• Members receive regular updates on the latest news and exciting developments at FREIRAD via our email newsletter and the printed program guide sent by mail. You can sign up for these here.
• Members receive discounts on FREIRAD’s wide range of professional training programs.
• As a member of the association, you are invited to the General Assembly (Generalversammlung). It might sound boring, but it isn’t. It is a space for information, exchange, and discussion. Because you have a say, you actively help shape the life of the association.

The membership fee covers a full year and costs

• € 50 for individuals
• € 120 for associations/organizations
• € 25 for individuals with very low income
• € 240 for supporting members*
• Free for holders of a „Kulturpass“ (culture pass)

Your contribution strengthens FREIRAD’s financial position. This is especially important in challenging times when non-profit associations and community media face threats from right-wing politics and neoliberal commercialization. Together, we stand for media literacy, social dialogue, and structurally anchored spaces for civic participation—beyond the logic of ratings and advertising! How to become a member

To become a member, simply send your completed and signed membership application to wir@freirad.at and pay the membership fee. Decisions regarding membership admission are made shortly after the application is submitted, and you will receive a confirmation email.

You can print out a receipt for your bookkeeping here. You are welcome to pay the membership fee via bank transfer or in person at the office. The same applies to donations! If you pay in person, there’s coffee—and maybe even cake—waiting for you!

How is FREIRAD funded?

We are non-commercial and ad-free. This guarantees that we can produce radio programming independently of commercial and political interests. We receive backing from UNESCO, the Council of Europe, and the European Parliament, all of which recommend that their member states provide financial support to independent radio stations in the interest of media diversity and freedom of expression. To this end, the federal government established the Fund for the Promotion of Non-Commercial Broadcasting (NKRF) in 2010, with an annual endowment of € 6.25 million. These funds support Austria’s 14 independent radio stations and 3 community TV stations. However, NKRF funding requires co-financing from the federal states and municipalities; FREIRAD receives this support from the State of Tyrol and the City of Innsbruck. Membership fees from our association members provide another vital and necessary financial boost. This allows us to „afford“ to broadcast diverse, multilingual, experimental, unconventional, and extraordinary programs.
